A smart planter system for growing learners

The planter’s integrated sensors for moisture, sunlight, and soil pH are connect to an app which communicates to the user the needs of their plant.  Designed specifically for children, the app rewards the user when their plant is well taken care of, promoting responsible habits and fostering a connection with nature through technology.

User Insights

Although too much screen time is often an issue faced by parents, how can technology be used as a tool for promoting hands-on activities and fostering responsible habits in kids?

The familiarity of a mobile app and character-based interaction can encourage a child’s interest in something positive and educational, such as gardening.

Industrial Design

The process of designing the product involved development of form, CMF, and incorporation of internal components. This was guided by initial research and completed through concept sketching as well as 3D modeling and rendering.

Establishing a brand for the product helped guide visual brand language and identity, bridging the gap between the design of the physical product, user interface, and supporting graphics.
